Morning Sickness in Pregnancy.
Morning sickness is something, to a degree, nearly 80% of women suffer with during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. Severe morning sickness is called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), this is an extreme form of morning sickness, affecting about 1% of women. This condition can lead you to develop severe nausea which often doesn't go away, as well as vomiting, which can then lead to dehydration and a complete loss of appetite and poor weight gain. This condition can sometimes lead to hospitalisation.
Resulting Food Aversion
Morning sickness can lead to food aversion which often occurs when certain foods make you feel very uncomfortable either in taste or smell. You may then get a feeling of nausea, hate the taste or have problems swallowing. This then leads to you avoiding these foods as much as possible and you may then begin to develop a programmed association to these foods. Even though the vomiting is pregnancy-related, you could start associating this food with feeling sick in the future leading you to avoid that food in case the experience is repeated.
Common food aversions during pregnancy include milk, meat, eggs and certain vegetables. Pregnant women suffering from morning sickness then tend to gravitate towards pastas, rice, bread, cookies and cake, leading to a nutritional challenge. This is not the same as anorexia nervous, a mental eating disorder, in which a patient will intentionally starve themselves. Food aversion is often only temporary during the pregnancy itself but can continue afterwards as the new patterns of behaviour have become established in your subconscious mind.
How effective is Hypnosis for Morning Sickness?
Hypnotherapy can help to take away your negative thoughts connected with food resulting from the morning sickness, and replace them with positive thoughts and new ways of behaving. It can also help you to relax and dissociate from the feelings of nausea so you find you don't notice them as much. Hypnotherapy by passes logic and reason, and engages with your subconscious mind to establish new associations allowing you to visualise a different outcome whilst in a state of calm and relaxation.
