Fear of flying, driving, spiders, small spaces, dentists, needles, dogs - the list is endless. Most people are scared or anxious about certain things or situations, and usually try and manage their fear by avoiding whatever it is that bothers them.
You could be aware of how your phobia was created or may have no awareness of why or how you first learnt it. Sometimes phobias begin with a single incident, often when we are young, but they can gradually develop over time. We also learn fears by seeing other people respond to their fear.
The way the brain works gives us clues as to why phobias develop. Experiencing a strong negative emotion, in the presence of some object or creature, leads to an unconscious learning that this is dangerous and to be avoided in the future.
When faced with that object again, or even something that looks remotely like it, your brain will trigger the fear response to motivate you to get away from what it perceives as danger. In the case of a phobia, your natural reactions are working perfectly normally but in response to the wrong triggers.
