Updated: January 20, 2021
Suffering From Trypanophobia - Fear Of Needles?
Do you avoid the doctor or dentist, so that you don't have to have injections?
Do needles make you feel faint, dizzy, panicky or cause endless anxiety and stress?
If you struggle with the thought of needles, you are not alone. At least 10% of people are affected by a fear of needles, and studies have found sufferers are more likely to be younger women. The good news is that you don't have to suffer from a needle phobia.
Imagine not having to suffer from a racing heartbeat, sweating palms or blurred vision when you walk into a waiting room.
Well, you can! It really is possible to get rid of your fear of needles for good.
Using Hypnotherapy, it is possible to overcome your trypanophobia, needle fear and feel calm, relaxed and in control during an injection. Hypnosis is a natural and effective treatment that gives you confidence so that you'll no longer be afraid of injections, blood tests or medical treatments.
What Is Trypanophobia?
Trypanophobia is the term used to describe an extreme fear of medical procedures that involves injections or hypodermic needles. Trypanophobia is a serious condition and can impact your health and quality of life. Left alone, it can leave you avoiding or refusing medical procedures such as dentists, blood tests, injections.
How does it differ from Aichmophobia and Belonephobia?
Aichmophobia is general fear of sharp objects which can include needles, syringes as well as other sharp objects.
Belonephobia is an irrational fear of needles and pins, which can result in the person behaving out of character or developing high levels of anxiety just at the thought of a hypodermic needle.
Fear Of Needle Symptoms
A fear of needles or needle phobia can manifest in a number of different ways. Some of the most common symptoms you may experience include:
• Rapid pulse/racing heart rate.
• High blood pressure.
• Feeling dizzy or faint.
• Panic attacks.
• Sweating, shaking and feeling nauseous.
• Feeling unable to breathe.
• Anxiety or stress at the thought of needles.
• Insomnia as you lie awake worrying.
If you're neglecting your health because of your needle fear, then it is time to put your health first. By overcoming this phobia, you can prioritise your health and wellbeing and make sure you look after yourself, without fear or anxiety holding you back.
Reasons For A Fear Of Needles
A study found that a phobia usual commences after a traumatic event. 52% of people associate their fear due to a previous event. 24% of people develop their needle phobia through a vicarious event, such as seeing a sibling in distress when receiving an injection. 7% of people develop trypanophobia due to information or instructions they have received while 17% are not sure where their phobia from.
What's more, other studies have found that people with needle phobia are more likely to have biological relatives who already have a fear of needles. This biological link is more prevalent with needle phobia than any other phobias.
When we have a memory or a trigger of trauma, the body naturally begins its fight or flight response. This can leave you feeling all-consumed by anxiety, stress and fear. It can be hard to think rationally about the procedure, whether that's a blood test, vaccination or a routine dental/medical treatment.
The anxiety response of fight or flight sadly doesn't mean the medical issue goes away. The problem will continue to manifest, meaning you may avoid potentially beneficial preventative treatment in the future.
Needle Fear Treatment
There are several needle fear treatments for you to consider, which may help make things a little easier so you can overcome your fear of injections and start to feel less anxious.
Medication For Needle Phobia
One option is to use medication that has a sedative effect during medical treatment. However, this is not solving the problem at the root cause. Instead, it is just mitigating the stress during treatment; you may still suffer from fear and anxiety in the run-up to the event.
Breathing For Relaxation
Deep breathing can help you to reduce your anxiety and leave you feeling in control of your symptoms. Start by sitting upright but comfortably. Roll your shoulders back and allow them and your jaw to relax. Then, with one hand on your lower belly, take a long, gentle and deep breath in through your nose, feeling the breath in your belly by the movement of your hand. Don't force the breath, but just breathe as deeply and slowly as if comfortable for you.
Lie Down During an Injection
As blood pressure can drop during treatment for patients with trypanophobia, it can help to lie down during treatment, or tilting the chair so that your legs are higher than your head. This can help to transport more blood to the brain during your treatment which can prevent you fainting or passing out.
If you really want to make a difference to your medical or dental treatment fear, then you may want to consider hypnotherapy. This offers a deep and powerful change to help you take control of your feelings. My approach is to use a combination of hypnotherapy, NLP and CBT to help you overcome your fear and provide coping strategies and techniques.
How Does Hypnosis For Needle Phobia Help?
Hypnosis helps you to think differently about needles and injections. Hypnotherapy uses positive conditioning which allows your brain to have new associations about vaccines and injections. This reprogramming means you no longer feel afraid of needles.
With this positive conditioning, you can receive an injection, without stress and worry. The thought and time before, during and after an injection can be free from anxiety, panic and fear.
A Trypanophobia Hypnosis Session
During a hypnotherapy session, we would:
Begin by exploring where the fear of needles stems from and any significant memories of needles and injections, as well as the relationship to fear that you have because of needles. Your subconscious mind is probably working to protect you from pain and danger and is using your previous learnt fear of needles to try and protect you.
We could change these negative associations and thought patterns with positive beliefs. You could transition from something like, "even the thought of a needle makes me feel sick", to "I'm a little nervous, and that's OK". So that you start to live without the fear of needles.
Using hypnosis visualisations and suggestions, we could begin to prepare you for a different experience next time you have to have an injection or medical procedure.
You will also learn some self help techniques, which you can practice and use out of the session, so you can more quickly reduce any anxiety if it does arise in the future.
How Many Hypnosis Sessions
You will not need hypnosis for every injection or medical treatment. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, but it is usually possible to eliminate the fear of needles in just a few hypnotherapy sessions depending on your experiences. However, I will tailor your programme entirely on you and your needs to get meaningful, life-changing results that help you overcome your fear for good.
With fear of needle hypnosis, you can overcome your anxiety quickly, easily and comfortably. Imagine being able to see a picture of a syringe and not feeling your heart begin to race, or to be able to visit the dentist or doctor without spending weeks worrying and building up the courage to visit.
Hypnosis could help you to free yourself from needle phobia forever.
Let me tell you I was once the person who would avoid blood tests, felt sick at the thought of an injection and knew that there was no way I would have an epidural during birth. I can't say I look forward to blood tests but I can now do all of these things with a completely different mindset thanks to learning some simple tools so I can stay in control.
Hypnosis For Needle Dental Phobia
It is thought that around 30% to 75% of adults have fear at the thought of dental treatment. Consequently, many people who have dental phobia will put off going to the dentist and receiving treatment for many years, which can put their health at risk.
Often it is caused by trypanophobia, but even if its not related to needle fear hypnotherapy can also provide effective treatment for dental phobia. With hypnotherapy, we can explore your fears in a safe, relaxing environment and using cues and reprogramming to help you overcome your fear of the dentist, so it is also possible to receive dental treatment without stress and anxiety.
Hypnosis For COVID Vaccine
With the COVID vaccine being rolled out, many people may have anxiety about receiving the vaccine and could choose not to receive their vaccination due to needle phobia.
By eliminating your needle and injection phobia now, you can prepare yourself to receive the COVID vaccine without unnecessary anxiety, and could also be prepared for any other vaccinations you may need in the future.
